Using rechargeable batteries can be a great way to help the environment by reducing waste but not everyone realises that there are many different types of rechargeable and non rechargeable battery and they all have their own advantages and disadvantages. For example Nickel Metal Hydride batteries self discharge at a rate of around 25% a month making them unsuitable for low current devices such as smoke detectors. Practical Home Energy Saving has just published battery comparison tables of some of the most common types of battery to help make informed choices.

Can Energy Saving Light Bulbs Damage Your Health

I came across an article on Yahoo News while doing some research which suggests that some types of bulbs contain small amounts of mercury. The article only deals with compact fluorescent lamps and suggests there is a potential hazard if bulbs get broken and also from the effects of disposing of them in landfill. I haven’t noticed any health warnings on the boxes in this country but then maybe I haven’t looked hard enough. Interesting eh??!!

A search of the internet reveals there are not many non commercial / non government sites listing links to non commercial sites and/or blogs with information and results for practical home energy saving. To try and rectify this shadlock.eu was launched yesterday to act as a European gateway to such sites.
